What is a Direct Support Professional (DSP)?
Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) work directly with people who have intellectual or developmental disabilities, helping them live the life they choose. This can include help with daily activities like shopping or keeping medical appointments and supporting them by participating in their community. A DSP can be the key to individuals achieving greater levels of independence.

Vindra Moore, Assistant Employment Services Coordinator, has been with The Arc for six years and recognizes the importance of keeping a positive attitude. “Each day is a daily reminder that when I come to The Arc, I can make someone’s day better,” said Vindra. “Being able to make a change in someone’s day and receiving positive feedback from families is always a plus, too!”
One thing Vindra hopes to share with others? Increased visibility for our work. “I wish that the public had more experience with the people that we serve,” said Vindra. “More people would want to be a DSP if they saw how rewarding it is – being able to assist individuals with doing the things they want to do.”
April Prevard, Residential Assistant Manager, has been with The Arc for three years after starting her career as overnight staff. Her kindness shines through in how she interacts with the people she supports.
“My favorite thing about this work is giving these ladies the support and care that I would want for my own family member,” said April. “One of the most rewarding experiences about being a DSP is building connections with people you never thought you would.”
